1. We start with a one of the bases from the Craters & rough terrain set. |
2. Affix a low rim lid to the centre of the base using double-sided sticky tape or a bit of blu-tak. Alternatively, you can loop some cardboard and glue in place to create a center ring for the crater. The ring should be approximately 5-6mm high. |
3. Mix some modelers compound with water and apply the mixture over the base with a plastic butter knife or equivalent to form a build-up towards the center. Use the front of the knife to lift up vain lines around the crater as the putty starts to dry. Be careful not to overfill the crater hole. |
4. While the compound mixture is drying you may want to add some stones for finer texture detail. They will be painted grey later (see step 8). |
5. Spray or paint the crater black. Allow to dry. |
6. Apply a heavy drybrush of 'Battle Field Grey' (dark brown) over the entire crater with less emphasis inside the center hole. |
7. Mix a little 'Blood Tracker Brown' (light brown) with 'Battle Field Grey' (dark brown) and apply a careful drybrush over the crater to highlight the mud. |
8. With a small brush carefully paint the stones 'Ironhull Grey' (dark grey), then paint towards the center of each stone 'Bastion Grey' (light grey). Lightly drybrush some areas of the crater with 'Menoth White Base' (cream color) to highlight further. |
| 9. Apply hobby glue wherever you want grass and sprinkle over with grass flock. |
ACRYLIC PAINTS: We used P3 paints from Privateer Press, however similar colours from any brand could be used. The following colors were used to paint the Crater: Tharmar Black, Battle Field Brown, Bloodtracker Brown, Iron Hull Grey, Bastion Grey, Menoth White Base.
