Church

Painting the Church

There are a number of ways that you can paint your model. This guide shows you the techniques that we used to paint the Church. The same techniques can be applied for the Cross and the Well. These are the items you will need:

  • TEXTURED PAINT: Used to achieve a sandy/rough concrete effect. We used white Dulux Sandswept. However, if you don't want to use textured paint, you could mix sand into watered down PVA.

  • MATT-BLACK SPRAY PAINT: Any brand of enamel will work fine. Tip: Discount Stores are a good place to obtain them. Do not use gloss-black.

  • ACRYLIC PAINTS: Although any brand will work, we used Citadel paints because of their large range of natural colors. The following Citadel colors were used to paint the church: Codex grey, Fortress grey, Bestial brown, Snakebite leather, Regal blue, Hideous blue, Bleached bone, Skull white and Chaos Black.

NOTE: Regal blue, Hideous blue and Chaos black are only needed if you choose to manually create the tiled roof rather than use the provided templates.

  • ARTISTS BRUSHES: Small and large.

- INSTRUCTIONS -

1. Ensure that all parts are glued together before painting. You may also add a woodgrain to the door before proceeding.
2. Apply the textured paint (or Sand-PVA mixture) only to those parts of the model that are meant to be stone/concrete then allow to dry. Avoid painting the wooden frame, door, window sills and roof.
3. Spray the entire model Matt-Black. Do this in a well ventilated area. Allow to dry.
4. Drybrush the textured sections Codex Grey. Normally 2 to 3 coats is enough to be effective.
5. Drybrush again 2 to 3 coats of Fortress Grey followed by a light drybrush of Bleached bone and paint the wooden frame, door and window sills Bestial Brown.

6. Apply a dabbing of Snakebite leather to all wooden sections followed by a light drybrush of Bleached bone.

7. Highlight all wooden edges with Bleached bone and all stone edges with Skull white.

8. For a tile roof with a more 3D effect, cut out individual tiles from a cereal pack approximately 1cm x 2cm in size and lay them starting from the base of the roof, working upward.

Alternatively, for a faster approach, you may download a colour roof template from the Church Template. Print it 1:1 scale on a colour printer and follow its instructions on how to prepare and attach it to the model. Then proceed directly to Step 11.

9. Paint the roof Chaos black.
10. Drybrush the tiles Regal blue using a downward stroke, then repeat with Hideous blue.

11. Apply any additional effects such as weathered effects, moss or leaded windows.
